SAIL's role

SAIL acts as a coordinator, facilitator and resource for for organizations conducting racing events. It does not, itself, conduct races.  `

Types of racing

Racing in the region consists mostly of weekend-long regattas with open entry and weeknight races primarily for club members. Races are typically 45 minutes to an hour long; two will be held in an evening if wind permits and six or seven per weekend.

There are a few "distance" races of several hours length on lakes large enough to permit it.

One-Design vs. Handicapped Fleets:

Most open & club events in the SAIL region accept entries for both one-design & handicap classes. A one-design fleet will be granted for a minimum number of boats in the class. Those without sufficient boats to make a one-design fleet will be placed in a handicap fleet. The handicap fleets will usually be scored on the Portsmouth Yardstick (for dinghies & multi-hulls) and SAIL PHRF time-on-time (for keelboats).

Events

Regattas: SAIL coordinates the schedule of open regattas in the region & our calendar lists other events, as reported to us.

Regional Championship Tours

SAIL sponsors regional tour championships for

Each tour consists of a circuit of regattas defined before the season begins. No entry form is needed; each individual or family member is considered entered upon paying SAIL dues for the year and the tour is scored, based on results from the tour’s regattas.

The tours are scored, based on the best results in a minimum number of regattas, by high point system.

The only additional requirement for being scored for the tour championships is that teams who sail in more than one boat or with more than one skipper must notify the Tour Chairman and provide details before October 1 of the season being scored.

Read more about the Tours by clicking here.

Colorado Cup

The Colorado Cup is a competition between clubs & fleets. One of the regularly-scheduled open regattas is picked as the event to decide the Cup and the scoring is done as for cross country teams. More about it here.

Colorado Governor's Cup

SAIL takes proposals annually and awards the honor of hosting the Colorado Governor's Cup to the club with the winning bid. This is one of the most prestigious, popular and oldest events in the region. More about it here.

US SAILING Championships

for amateur sailors, men & women, adults & juniors:
SAIL membership carries the benefit of eligibility for regional, area, and national championships. US SAILING membership is required for Area F & national championships. SAIL will support a portion of the entry fee for qualifying teams in Area events.
