What's New in SAIL?

  • Advanced Race Management Seminar: SAIL has arranged an official US SAILING Advanced Race Management Seminar race committee workshop for on February 18-19, 2012. Contact Star Malouff for information or see the flier. The registration form is here.
  • annual-meeting 2011 Annual Meeting: SAIL's annual meeting was held Saturday, November 5, 2011 beginning 10:00 AM at the Cherry Creek Meadows Clubhouse with about thirty SAIL members participating. The agenda included
    • Awards of Tour trophies;
      • The Colorado Cup was won by CSYC's PHRF A Fleet;
      • Jordan Nelson won the Junior Tour, with Max Williams 2nd and Rajiv N. 3rd;
      • Jim Ulatowski won the Keelboat Tour;
      • The Dinghy and PHRF Tour trophies were not awarded due to lack of qualifiers.
    • Nomination & election of officers;the slate presented by the nominating committee was elected; 
    • 2012 regatta schedule; Clubs are asked to submit their dates for open regattas prior to the meeting and come prepared to negotiate any conflicts; 
    • Bylaws amendments; and
    • Other business.
      • Topics included how to attract more dinghy sailors as members and possible reinstitution of the Nebraska Governor's cup at Lake McConaughey.

  • Nominations 2012 2012 Nominations: The nominating committee proposed the following officers for 2012 and all were elected:
    • Commodore -- Star Malouff, DYC
    • Vice Commodore -- Robyn Barnett, CSYC
    • Secretary -- Tim Schneider, Carter
    • Treasurer -- Joe Beierl, DSA
    • Area F Representative -- Michael Dannecker, DSA
    • Rear Commodore -- Not voted on, Matt Driscoll continues
    • With the by-law change approved:
      Director of Handicapping  -- Bob Malouff, CSYC

     
  • New Club Judges: In late February, three of SAIL's members took and passed the brand-new "Club Judge" program: Bob Malouff, Star Malouff & Mike Wilson. 
  • Pay your SAIL dues; re-join for 2012: SAIL memberships are valid only for a calendar year. If you haven't paid your 2012 dues, you won't be a member. Adults, go here to see a printable membership form which you can fill out and mail in with your check. Juniors, your form is here. Membership in SAIL helps the sport of sailing in the Rocky Mountain region and gives you individual benefits too. SAIL's revenue stream is membership dues.
    • PHRF: SAIL PHRF certificates also expire on Dec. 31 and need to be renewed each year. The fee is $5 (with SAIL membership, $20 without). The fee covers SAIL's cost to administer the PHRF system. Go here to apply.

  • SAIL's Safety Program: SAIL has developed a "Sailing Safety" program, specifically targeted to sailors. It is being offered to member clubs at no to minimal cost. (Sail has invested in the development costs & will pay the instructor.) E-mail Commodore Ross for more information & to schedule a date for your club at your lake.
  • Sailing Instructor Course: A US SAILING Level 1 Sailing Instructor Course was held on Cherry Creek at the end of May.  Look for the course again in May  2011.

  • Fireball-kj Keesling/Jackson win Fireball Nationals. Frank "Gorilla" Keesling & "Rockin' Robin" Jackson won the 2008 Fireball Nationals held on Lake Dillon in mid-June. Here's a picture of the winning form:

  • Sail Safely: SAIL has, unfortunately, experienced its share of tragic sailing accidents. No race, cruise or day-sail is worth serious injury or death. Keep safety your highest priority and watch our changeable weather.

To promote the sport of Sailing in the Rocky Mountain Area and encourage excellence in it. To represent US Sailing and to participate in US Sailing's annual National Championship by organizing Area championships and by ensuring excellence in race management and judging.

SAIL is the regional sailing association for Colorado, New Mexico, western Nebraska and Wyoming . SAIL is one of three regional sailing associations making up Area F of US Sailing, along with

SAIL was formed in 1972 to provide a communication route with Colorado State Parks for helping facilitate sailing clubs to organize sailing and sail racing events within the state and joined the national organization which became US SAILING in the mid-1970s. Its role has broadened to include coordinating sailing event schedules & education & training.  It promotes & provides programs to promote & improve sailing in the greater Rocky Mountain region.

Strictly a volunteer operation, SAIL is a 503c Colorado "Not for Profit" organization. Officers and volunteers receive no compensation other than good will and the satisfaction of helping the sport.. Its operations are supported primarily by members' dues. Operations are supported primarily by members’ annual dues, though fees to defray expenses are charged for some activities. Overhead is kept low by foregoing office rent and equipment expense.

SAIL provides representation within US SAILING (the National Governing Body for the sport of Sailing) to sailors, clubs & fleets in the Rocky Mountain region . 

SAIL works, through its many programs, to promote and improve the sport of sailing in the Rocky Mountain region.

  • We coordinate the calendar of open regattas helps avoid date conflicts and encourage participation.
  • A newsletter, "The Intermountain Sailor", communicates news to sailors.
  • Our PHRF Fleet enables fair handicap racing for keelboats.
  • Our series of four monthly seminars in the winter and spring help sailors improve their knowledge & skills and stay abreast of developments.
  • Our annual race management seminars upgrade the quality of racing.
  • This website provides sailing news in the region and much other information about the sport. The "Race Management" section has many tools and guidance for race committees. 
  • We also facilitate training for certification of race officers and judges.
  • We coordinate & promote tours of open regattas for season championships for dinghies, keelboats & juniors.
  • We coordinate and promote a circuit of junior regattas to help grow the sport of sailing.
  • We developed and now offer a free Sailing Safety program to member clubs.
  • We coordinate a sailing instructor training and certification course under the auspices of US SAILING.
