  • Sailing Instructor Course: SAIL's  US SAILING Level 1 Sailing Instructor Course on Cherry Creek at the end of May. Seven candidates took the 2009 course; 7 graduated. Look for the course again in May  2010.

  • SAIL's Safety Program: SAIL has developed a "Sailing Safety" program, specifically targeted to sailors. It is being offered to member clubs at no to minimal cost. (Sail has invested in the development costs & will pay the instructor.) E-mail Commodore Ross for more information & to schedule a date for your club at your lake.

  • Bill Miller: With much sadness, we report that Bill Miller -- Commodore of SAIL in 1979 --  died from complications of leukemia on December 9, 2009. Bill, age 85, was a pioneer of organized sailing in the Rocky Mountain region. In addition to his leadership of SAIL, he was an avid dinghy sailor and a mainstay of DSA for many years. From 1964 to very recently, Bill was a welcome presence on the race course. A math teacher, musician & ski patroller, he'll be missed by many. A memorial is planned for December 30 at First Baptist Church, 1373 Grant St., Denver.

  • Keesling/Jackson win Fireball Nationals. Frank "Gorilla" Keesling & "Rockin' Robin" Jackson won the 2008 Fireball Nationals held on Lake Dillon in mid-June.

  • Tour Video Available: Randy and Lisa Shelton from Chatfield race in most of the events on the SAIL Tour. They also are excellent videographers, shoot while they race and have put together two exciting videos called "Colorado Wind" & "Sanity" which include the 2007 & 2008 tour races at Alcova, Aspen, Carter, Chatfield, Cherry Creek, and Dillon. To see it, go to the Cruising World website, http://www.cruisingworld.com, and then go to the top right of the home page where there is a tab for member videos.  Click on the tab and find Colorado Wind there. If you like what’s on the website, you can buy a much cleaner DVD version (color, clarity, sound) from Randy and Lisa for $10 plus postage.  Email them at randy@grcbuilders.com for more information.

  • Sailor overboard, drowns: On May 23, 2008 Bob Snare, a respected sailor, was on the foredeck of his boat at Cherry Creek Res. when a sudden gust of high wind caused him to go overboard.  He was not wearing a personal flotation device; when the crew got the boat back to him, he was no longer visible. His body was recovered that evening. The coroner has ruled his death due to accidental drowning.
